THIS GENERATION OF ATHLETES CAN TRACK ALMOST EVERYTHING
We track times, distances, reps, heart rate, sleep, strain, recovery, steps, and training volume. We have access to more information about our bodies than athletes from any previous generation could have imagined.
That information can be incredibly useful because it can help us notice patterns, understand our habits, investigate health concerns, and make more informed decisions about training and recovery.
The challenge begins when we start treating every number like a final answer.
A green recovery score can make us feel like we should push harder. A red score can make us question whether we are ready to compete. A low step count can make us feel like we need less food. A normal blood test result can make us doubt symptoms that are still very real.
Wearables, bloodwork, menstrual cycle information, and performance results can all teach athletes something valuable, but none of them can explain the entire athlete on their own.
The goal is not to choose between data and intuition. It is to use data to understand ourselves better without giving it more authority than it deserves.
WHAT 5 YEARS OF WEARABLE DATA TAUGHT ME
I have been a WHOOP member since 2021.
For almost five years, with my fifth anniversary coming up next month, I have woken up and looked at some combination of my sleep, recovery, resting heart rate, heart rate variability, and strain.
Over time, I have learned a lot from those numbers. I have learned how much sleep I need to feel my best, which habits help me get to bed earlier, and how travel, stress, hard training, and late nights can affect my recovery.
At this point, I can often predict approximately how much sleep I got before I open the app.
Using a wearable has made me care more about sleep. It has helped me recognize patterns that I probably would not have noticed otherwise, and those patterns have changed my behavior.
It has also taught me that the number does not always know first.
Sometimes I feel a twinge in my throat before my recovery score reflects that I might be getting sick. Sometimes I wake up feeling well rested and see a bad score. Sometimes I get a great score and still feel off.
I have also performed well after bad recovery scores, and I have performed badly after good ones.
That does not mean we should disregard the data, but it does mean that the data needs context.
WHOOP is the wearable I know best, and its newer features show where athlete health technology may be heading. It now offers menstrual cycle insights that combine self-reported cycle information with physiological data such as resting heart rate and skin temperature. It also allows members to upload supported blood test results and view them alongside recovery, sleep, and strain information (WHOOP, 2026a; WHOOP, 2026b).
That is exciting, but this is not really an article about one company. It is about what happens when athletes have more information about their bodies than ever before, and how we make sure that information remains helpful.
WHAT WEARABLES CAN TEACH US
My experience reflects one of the greatest strengths of wearables. They are especially useful for showing patterns across time.
They can estimate sleep, track resting heart rate, measure heart rate variability, and show changes across days or weeks. They may help athletes consider how training, travel, illness, stress, and daily habits relate to recovery.
For me, one of the greatest benefits has been learning about sleep, as the data has encouraged me to build healthier sleep patterns. It made sleep feel like an active part of training rather than something that simply happened after the work was over.
Wearables can also help athletes think beyond one workout. A hard session may be manageable by itself, but that same session combined with poor sleep, academic stress, travel, and several demanding training days may tell a different story.
At the same time, consumer wearables do not measure every outcome equally well. Research suggests that some measures, such as heart rate, may be reasonably accurate in certain settings, while sleep stages, energy expenditure, and calculated recovery scores can be less consistent across devices (Doherty et al., 2024; Miller et al., 2022).
That does not mean we should ignore wearable data. It means we should understand what the device is actually measuring and avoid treating an estimate like a diagnosis.
The best use of a wearable is not to create a perfect week on an app. It is to notice patterns, ask better questions, and gain a better understanding of what may be happening beneath the surface.
WHAT BLOODWORK CAN ADD
Wearables may show that something is changing, while bloodwork can sometimes help a qualified medical professional investigate why.
Depending on the athlete, her symptoms, and the reason for testing, bloodwork may help evaluate iron status, anemia, nutrient deficiencies, thyroid function, inflammation, illness, or other possible contributors to fatigue and performance changes.
Blood results should still be reviewed by a qualified professional. A value that appears high or low does not explain its cause, its importance, or whether it requires treatment. Trying to interpret a full panel alone can create unnecessary alarm when the results are separated from symptoms, medical history, recent training, previous values, or the conditions surrounding the test.
Iron is especially relevant to athletes because it contributes to oxygen transport, energy metabolism, and muscle function. Female athletes and endurance athletes may face an increased risk of iron deficiency because of factors including menstruation, dietary intake, training demands, and exercise related iron loss (Pedlar et al., 2018; Pengelly et al., 2025).
As part of my transition to Yale athletics, I was asked to complete bloodwork. Ferritin testing was specifically recommended for female athletes and endurance athletes.
I was grateful that women’s health was being genuinely considered.
The testing felt proactive. It was not only a response to an injury or a major performance decline. It was an effort to gather useful information early.
That approach matters because athletes often wait until something goes seriously wrong before looking internally. We wait until the athlete is exhausted, her performance drops, she gets injured, or she loses her menstrual cycle. Only then do we start asking questions.
Establishing a baseline can give an athlete and her medical team something to refer back to if her health or performance changes. It cannot guarantee that every future concern will be caught, but it may make later information more useful.
Instead of only asking whether a result falls inside a reference range, the athlete and her medical team may also be able to ask whether something has changed over time.
WHEN THE NUMBERS AND YOUR BODY DISAGREE
My own bloodwork has come back relatively normal even when my health was not fully normal. I still did not have a menstrual cycle even though most of my results fell within their reference ranges.
That experience did not convince me that bloodwork was pointless. What it showed me was that bloodwork was one part of a much larger picture. My results gave me useful and reassuring information, but they did not erase what my body and cycle were telling me.
Menstrual dysfunction can be one sign associated with Low Energy Availability and Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport. RED-S is a broader syndrome that can affect reproductive function, bone health, metabolism, immunity, psychological health, recovery, and athletic performance. Its assessment requires more than one symptom or laboratory result (Mountjoy et al., 2023).
No single blood marker captures that entire picture, and the same principle applies to wearables. A green recovery score should not make an athlete ignore pain, illness, extreme fatigue, or a missing period, while a red recovery score does not guarantee that she will perform badly.
When the numbers and your body disagree, the disagreement itself can be useful.
The device may have picked up a pattern that you have not noticed yet, or your body may be responding to something the device cannot measure. A score may also be affected by a temporary change that has little to do with your ability to train or compete that day.
Bloodwork can create similar questions. A result may need to be considered alongside symptoms, menstrual health, fueling, recent training, illness, medical history, and previous results.
The goal is not to automatically trust the number or immediately reject it. It is to look for patterns, consider the context, and involve a qualified professional when something continues or feels concerning.
WHY I DO NOT CHECK MY RECOVERY BEFORE COMPETITION
I do not look at my recovery score before I compete because, by that point, there is usually very little I can do with the information.
I have already slept, completed my training, and traveled to the competition.
Seeing a bad recovery score could change how I interpret every feeling during my warmup. Normal nerves could suddenly feel like proof that I am not ready, and a heavy first stride could feel like confirmation that I am not recovered.
I would rather warm up and pay attention to how my body actually feels. That does not mean I reject the data. I can still look at it later and decide whether it fits into a larger pattern.
I just do not need every available number at every available moment. More information is not always more useful when it arrives at a time when it can only make me second guess myself.
WHEN INFORMATION STARTS BECOMING PERMISSION
Wearables can help athletes make decisions, but they should not make athletes feel like they need permission to live.
It can be difficult to wake up to a bad recovery score, especially when you thought you slept well. It can be even more frustrating when you already know you did not sleep well and the number confirms it.
One bad night is not going to erase months of training, and one imperfect week does not mean everything is falling apart. The body is adaptable, and progress is built across much longer periods than one sleep score or recovery result.
There are also times when protecting a perfect score should not be the most important goal.
When I am traveling or celebrating a special occasion, I sometimes have to ignore certain data points because the memories I am creating may matter more than maintaining a perfect sleep score.
That does not mean sleep stops being important. It means health includes having a life too.
The same problem can happen with strain, steps, and estimated calories burned. Athletes can begin looking at activity data as permission to eat. A high strain day may feel like permission to have more food, while a low step day may create pressure to eat less.
That is not what the data is for.
The amount of food your body needs is not determined only by your steps, strain, or an estimated calorie total. The body requires energy for much more than deliberate exercise, including brain function, growth, tissue repair, hormonal function, immune function, recovery, and preparation for future training.
A wearable estimates certain parts of what you did, but it does not calculate everything your body needs.
Underfueling can reduce the energy available to support both performance and essential physiological processes. When this becomes problematic, prolonged, or severe, it can contribute to LEA and RED-S (Mountjoy et al., 2023).
Wearable data should never become a food allowance.
BLOODWORK ALSO NEEDS CONTEXT
Bloodwork may feel more final because it comes from a laboratory, but the results still need context.
Recent exercise, inflammation, illness, hydration, food intake, medications, and the conditions surrounding the test can affect certain measurements.
Ferritin is commonly used to help assess stored iron, but it can also rise during inflammation. This means it may need to be considered alongside other markers, symptoms, recent illness, and previous results rather than interpreted by itself (Pedlar et al., 2018; Pengelly et al., 2025).
This does not mean that a slightly high or low result should automatically be dismissed. It means the number does not explain itself. So, an athlete should discuss her results with a qualified professional who can consider why the test was ordered, recent training and competition, current symptoms, menstrual health, illness, previous results, fueling patterns, medications, supplements, and other medical information.
Researchers and clinicians also do not use one universal ferritin target for every athlete. Interpretation can depend on the athlete, her symptoms, the reason for testing, and the larger clinical picture (Pengelly et al., 2025).
That is why athletes should not begin taking iron or other supplements because a value looked low on an app, a social media chart, or another athlete’s blood panel.
Iron supplementation can be appropriate when recommended and monitored by a qualified professional, but unnecessary iron intake is not automatically harmless.
Being interested in your own data is a good thing. Self-diagnosing and treating yourself from one number is different.
LOOK FOR PATTERNS RATHER THAN PERFECTION
One recovery score, one night of sleep, one training session, and one blood test can all provide useful information.
A repeated change may create a pattern, but that pattern still needs context.
Instead of panicking over one number, ask:
Has this been happening repeatedly?
Does the number match how I feel?
Has my performance or menstrual cycle changed?
Has my training load or fueling changed?
Is this something I should discuss with a qualified professional?
The purpose of tracking should not be to produce a perfect dashboard. It should be to help us ask better questions.
THE FULL FEMALE ATHLETE PICTURE
No single source of data can describe an entire athlete. A fuller picture may include several categories.
How You Feel
Energy, hunger, soreness, mood, motivation, concentration, pain, coordination, and the feeling that something is different.
Menstrual Health
Cycle regularity, missed periods, changes in symptoms, and patterns across training phases.
Performance
Speed, strength, power, endurance, training quality, and the ability to complete normal sessions.
Wearable Trends
Sleep, resting heart rate, heart rate variability, training strain, and recovery patterns.
Clinical Information
Bloodwork, medical history, injury assessments, and professional evaluation.
Daily Context
Fueling, school stress, travel, illness, relationships, training demands, and changes in routine.
These categories do not compete with one another. They support one another.
You have access to information about your body that no device can fully capture because you are the person living inside it every day. At the same time, knowing yourself does not require rejecting technology or medical information.
It means using every appropriate tool without handing complete control to any one of them.
Your body is the source, and the data is support. It should always be a guide, never a controller.
S.F.F. Fuel of the Week: Fuel Without Permission
This week, choose a food you enjoy and eat it without checking your step count, strain score, or estimated calories first.
It does not need to be the most nutrient dense food in your kitchen, and it does not need to be saved for a special occasion, a hard workout, or a day when you burned enough calories.
Here are a few ideas:
Greek yogurt with granola, fruit, and dark chocolate
Toast with peanut butter, banana, and chocolate chips
Cereal with milk
Crackers, cheese, and fruit
A smoothie with fruit, milk, yogurt, and nut butter
Trail mix with nuts, pretzels, dried fruit, and chocolate
Ice cream after dinner
Dark chocolate with fruit and nuts
Food can provide carbohydrates, protein, fats, vitamins, minerals, comfort, pleasure, connection, or some combination of all of them.
Not every food needs to be optimized.
Your body needs fuel on hard days, and it also needs fuel on rest days. Recovery is still work, even when your wearable does not give you a high strain score.
S.F.F. Performance Habits
Choose one wearable trend to observe this week without immediately judging it.
Write down how you feel before checking your recovery score.
Keep fueling consistently on lower activity and rest days.
Track menstrual changes with the same seriousness that you track sleep or performance.
Bring persistent changes in energy, menstrual function, injury, or performance to a qualified medical professional.
Ask whether establishing appropriate baseline health information makes sense for you.
This Week’s Challenge
If you are an athlete: Spend one morning noticing how you feel before opening your wearable app. Then compare your experience with the data.
If you are a coach: Create space for athletes to report fatigue, menstrual changes, illness, poor recovery, and unusual performance changes without treating those concerns as weakness. When patterns continue, connect the athlete with an athletic trainer, physician, or another qualified professional. Coaches should not order or interpret bloodwork, but they can normalize proactive health conversations and encourage appropriate evaluation.
If you are a parent: Treat persistent fatigue, menstrual changes, recurring injuries, and performance declines as information worth investigating.
Data can help female athletes understand their bodies more deeply, but it should never replace what they notice, feel, and experience.
